Prep and anesthetize the skin. You can reduce the pain of injecting the anesthetic by warming it up for a few minutes in your hand or pocket and using a small bore needle. Once numb, make a single straight incision. You can use a Yankeur suction if available to contain the foul odor. Express from all angles. Probe and deloculate the abscess in all directions. Fully express any remaining pus. Irrigation is optional, and if performed, a splash shield should be used. Packing is also optional but may have a benefit when a large cavity is left behind. Packing materials should be loose. Place a dressing over top.
