NG tube placement is one of the more uncomfortable procedures performed in the ED. Isn’t it worthy of a little anxiolysis to smooth the way?

Midazolam? Why not just give 2-4 mg (depending on weight and age) of Morphine? As one is attempting to ameliorate pain. Why not premeditate for pain? I have been using small doses of morphine as premedication for NGT placement for 20 years.

Good thought, and I would hope that these patients have analgesia on board already for their SBO. With that said, I cant find anything on morphine as "pain prophylaxis" for NGT placement... Likewise, no matter how much opiate (within reason) you give someone for, say, a reduction, without lido theyre still quite uncomfortable.
Give 2mg of midaz a whirl and see how the staff, family, & you like it!
