Whit challenges the practice of including the patient's race in oral presentations. Where did this practice come from and how should we approach this moving forward?
Great chat Whitney! I removed race in my HPI long ago.
I stopped this practice of "identifying" my patient in terms of race/color several years ago. About 2 or 3 years ago I extended that concept and made deliberate decision to not mention race/color as a descriptor in any conversation, medical or non-medical. If the only way that I could describe a person was in those terms, then I decided that I didn't need to say anything at all about them.
What you do matters.
