I have started implementing the changes recommended in this episode regarding serum magnesium levels into my practice but I was hoping I could get links to the resources that support this. I couldn’t find it in the show notes. It has come up in discussion several times at work and it would be helpful to have the data to back up why I haven’t been ordering serum magnesium levels. Thanks!
Alexandra - I'll let Corey answer this as well but here is an article that I have on hand that may be helpful:
The relationship between disorders of K+ and Mg+ homeostasis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3317639
This one may be helpful as well: Magnesium Basics https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4455825/
And one more: The underestimated problem of using serum magnesium measurements to exclude magnesium deficiency in adults; a health warning is needed for "normal" results. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20170394
I know it's been three years, but I also would appreciate help convincing the hospitalistists and cardiologists to not obsess over magnesium levels! I've had numerous patients sent into the ED for emergency infusions of magnesium because their serum level was close to 1.
