The reviewers comment on the problem of pain with abscess I&D - a good solution is to provide nasal pain medication prior to the procedure making it much less unpleasant for the patient (this is not procedural sedation so no paperwork and observation issues with this). Options are ketamine 1 mg/kg, fentanyl 2 mcg/kg for kids, sufentanil 0.5 mcg/kg for larger humans (use pulse ox with this later drug). Works very well, no nursing time involved other that getting you the medication from the drug box, fast onset, fast off, efficacy essentially the same as IV opioids.
