Achilles Tendon Rupture

  • “Pop” after sudden jumping/stepping off motion
  • Most common in middle-aged men
  • Tests
    • Thompson test (lie prone, squeeze calf, if foot moves tendon is fine)
    • Tendon gap test - palpate length of tendon looking for gap
    • Matles test “saggy foot test” - prone, knees bent, if one foot flops down rupture likely 
  • Diagnosis = clinical, ultrasound shows balled up tendon, consider MRI in select cases
  • Treatment = Splint in plantar flexion, non weight-bearing, crutches, ortho follow up
