I am disturbed by the statement that eating disorders are a "coping strategy". This concept is outdated along with the trope that restrictive eating disorders are caused by trauma; there was also little mention of the strong influence of genetics and metabolic factors on the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa. Also, the most effective and evidence based treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa was mentioned very briefly at the end of the segment only.

Dr. Mary P.S,
Thank you for taking the time to listen to this episode and for your comments. I apologize that some of this episodes content was to your disliking. Although it saddens me that you have found some of the content to be disturbing, I am delighted that there is a physician listening that has the knowledge and passion for eating disorders like yourself. I do agree that this episodes content is underdeveloped with little information provided on the novel theoretical causes, diagnostic tools and treatments for eating disorders. Unfortunately the topic of eating disorders is not believed to be as important or attractive as other topics in medicine. I am appreciative that the ROP team was supportive of this episode. This was the first segment on eating disorders with hopes to gain listener interest so further episodes that allow for more advanced material can be created. Opening the door to this critical topic but poorly taught during most medical training is an opportunity for progress. To begin developing a more extensive eating disorder curriculum the ROP team felt beginning with this basic introduction approach would be appropriate. The interplay of psychosocial, biological, and psychological influences with the dynamic nature of predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors of eating disorders really does make it one of the most complicated medical conditions we face as clinicians. In future episodes I am excited to help break the misconceptions, educated listeners on evidence based treatment such as ro-DBT, Family based therapy, CBT-ED, MANTRA, CRT, CREST, and even Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, ketamine, EMDR, neurofeedback, etc. Thank you again for you comment and I hope that future episodes will be beneficial to you and our other listeners. Please feel free to contact me at dustynarducci@usf.edu.

Best Regards,
Dusty Narducci MD, CEDS, CAQSM, FAAFP
